Happy Birthday, Curiosity! Late on August 5th, 2012, PDT (August 6th, 2012, EDT), NASA’s Curiosity Rover successfully landed on the Red Planet. To celebrate, NASA recently released a video compilation of some images from Curiosity’s first year on Mars, which can be viewed here: http://www.space.com/22226-mars-rover-curiosity-time-lapse-video.html. Since it touched down, Curiosity has returned tens of thousands of images and taken samples of Martian rock that have been crucial in gaining a more complete understanding of the Martian landscape. Tonight, as Curiosity’s birthday festivities take off, even the rover itself will be celebrating - project engineers programmed one of Curiosity’s instruments, SAM (Sample Analysis at Mars) to play Happy Birthday by vibrating its sample chambers at different frequencies. Listen to the song here: http://www.space.com/22256-mars-science-laboratory-celebrates-one-year-on-mars-video.html. Read more about SAM here: http://www.universetoday.com/98599/i-am-sam/.
